Story Writing

The Technique of Story Writing

To develop a plot into a proper story is a matter of practical skill. You have to arrange the events in accordance with a set plan. The structure of a story should, however be based on the following points:

1.    Beginning

Your story should have as interesting beginning. Something that has happened or may happen anywhere to any person in the past may start the action.

2-Climax

When the events move, they touch a point, called the climax. Thus the height of an action in a story comes when it arouses our interest to know, ‘what next?

3-End

As the action of the story cannot be kept at its highest point for long, it must come down by and by to produce a particular result, the end of the story, which may be happy or sad, arousing our emotions of joy or grief.

In general, the method, which is followed in writing a story, should always aim at laying proper stress on all these points:

A story should be ‘an orderly whole, with a proper beginning, middle and end. The climax of the story should be put as far back as possible. If you bring it in the middle, it will spoil the reader’s interest in the incidents that follow.

At the intermediate the questions on story writing are usually are usually intended to test the student’s ability to write a story:-

a.     From a given outline

b.     Out of an unfinished tale

c.     On a given maxim or proverb

The following points should be born in mind by every student who attempts to write a story:-

i.              One should have a clear idea of the plot of the story before one begins writing a story on it.

ii.             If an outline is given, follow it closely, and narrate each event in its proper order.

iii.            Connect all the important points without missing anything. Use your imagination to supply the details.

iv.            Introduce a dialogue where necessary, but do not make it a practice.

v.             Try to make the conclusions as natural as possible.

vi.            Give a heading to your story. For this purpose one may choose the main character or incident, for example, A Faithful Dog, The Farmer and His Sons etc. that suits the story.

vii.           If needed, also give a moral to your story. But where the heading is a proverb, no moral is required.

viii.          The important word in the heading must begin with capital letters.

ix.            Use simple English and divide your story in suitable paragraphs.

x.             Try to make your story a complete whole.
